| The 3rd Infiltration Tunnel |
|
| The 3rd Tunnel was discovered on
October 17, 1978. It is located 52km from Seoul. Approximately 10,000 soldiers
can move through this tunnel In one hour. When this tunnel was discovered, North
Koreans insisted steadfastly that it was made by South Koreans to invade North
Korea, but this proved to be false. Mt. Dora Observation Platform is located
nearby the 3rd Tunnel. From this observation platform, North Korean military
personnel are visible, and so are the city of Gaeseong and the Geumgangsan
Diamond Mountains. | |
|
|
|
|
|
|
| Dora Observatory |
|
| It is the northernmost observatory
of South Korea from which visitors can view a part of North Korean life through
a telescope, such as Mt. Songaksan in Gaeseong, Kim Il-seong statue,
Gijeong-dong, the outskirts of Gaeseong-si, Train smokestack at Jangdan station,
and Geumamgol (collective farm). This has 304 sq. ft. and some facilities; 500
capacity, VIP Room, control office, 30 to 40 capacity parking lot. It opened to
the public in Jan. 1987 From Dora Observatory, tourists can view the North
Korean propaganda village in the DMZ and as far north as the city of
Gaeseong. | |

|
|
| Dorasan Station |
|
| 52 years of anticipation, waiting
for the day when the two countries will be united once again. Dorasan station,
the northernmost station in South Korea, has planned to connect the
Gyongueisun(Line) and it will be linked to the European continent via the
Siberian Railway. | |

|
| Panmunjeom |
|
| Panmunjeom is located about 60 km
northwest of Seoul along with “United Nation Command Military Armistice
Commission”(here after “UNCMAC”) office. Originally, the area used to be called
“Neolmunlee”. However, the area was designated as a new location for
armistice(cease-fire) talk in October, 1951 and the name of the area was written
in Chinese as Panmunjeom for the convenient of Chinese representatives. Ever
since then, the name of area has stayed as Panmunjeom. *Advance Camp “In front
of them all” in DMZ, this camp house an United Nations Command Support Group,
and this is where you have lunch, buy souvenirs, and official briefing on JSA.
*Joint Security Area When an important meeting is being held, this area is
crowded by guards and newsmen. After the “tree chopping incident” it was agreed
to separate the sentries and spilt this area in half. *Conference Room Take note
of the Military Demarcation Line running down the middle of the conference
table. Military Armistice Commission Meeting have been held here. *Freedom House
Built in 1965, it commands a fine view of the whole area of Panmunjeom. *Bridge
of no Return A UNC check point faces a north Korean one across the bridge. Close
by the bridge is the stump of the tree chopping incident in
1976. | |

|
|
|
| Freedom House |
|
| Current Freedom House was built on
our side of JSA-Panmunjom in July, 1998. Freedom House is a four story building
topped with transparent roof where ‘South and North Contact Office’ and ‘South
and North Red Cross Contact Office’ are installed to conduct their duty as a
point of contact between South and North. It is also a facility that supports
and follows up with various kinds of interchanges, humanitarian support,
contact, and conferences between South and North
Korea. | |
|
|
|
|
|
|
| Bridge of No Return |
|
| Bridge of No Return crosses the
middle of MDL in JSA and it used to serve as the only entrance into JSA from
Gaesong. However, it was never used again by either sides since the events of
the ‘Ax Murder Incident’ which occurred on August 18, 1976. Right after the
Armistice Agreement was made in 1953, POW exchange was made through the bridge
and this was when it was named as Bridge of No Return because once POWs decided
which direction they would want to go, then they were never again to be returned
to the other side. | |
